Exercise and I have not been friends . . . ever.

I was the kid in gym that was always the last to be picked for teams.  Always.  To be fair to those doing the picking, I have to admit that I didn't put myself out there.  I wasn't the fat kid that no one wanted.  Nope, not me.  I was the klutz.

When we did "tumbling" or "equipment" or, for that matter, basketball, tennis, softball or, God forbid, dancing (square dancing anyone?), I was the one who tripped over nothing (couldn't even blame my shoelaces), struck out, fouled out and couldn't dribble.  If it was on fire, I couldn't get my skinny arse up the rope.  Chewing gum and walking can be an issue.

I do remember some success on the even bars.  The success was that I was able to swing myself up onto the lower bar, stand on it and lean over and grabbing the upper bar and then swinging my way around.  Trust me, this success could be laid directly at the feet of the Zern's (our neighbors) plum trees and their older son who use to love to torture my sister and I and his sisters.  He, however, couldn't climb a tree.  Ha!

Gym class was designed as a torture device.  I despised it.  Over the years, I have done lots of different exercising.  I did totally wrack out my knees while doing step aerobics.  Truly.  If you read the above paragraphs, see the chewing gum and walking.  Now, visualize someone doing step aerobics who cannot chew gum and walk.  When the class was going up, I was going down.   They were going right, I was going left, but I did like it.  Right up to the time when I went up, over and down.  Hard.  On both knees.  Someday I am going to have to have knee surgery but I keep putting it off.

I do like deep water aerobics,  The only pain is getting in and out of the pool.  Oh, and our local rec center has now cancelled all evening classes.  But, I could take class at 10:00 a.m. M-F.  Just might interfere with work.

So, last evening I was doing counter push ups.  You know the ones where you stand far enough back from the counter and push-up off of it.  These work for me since I am not putting any pressure on my knees.  Really going at it.   My son joined me and we were laughing and sort of goofing off.

CRACK!  My right ankle and foot are swollen and painful.  Really!?!  My feet are firmly planted on the floor and I hurt it pushing off the counter with my arms and upper body.  How is that fair?

What is worse is that I am going to a conference tomorrow for three days.  Fortunately, I have spent so much quality time at the podiatrist, if necessary, I have a full selection of boots to choose from.  I did put on compression hose today and my most favorite, post foot surgery shoes.  They have a solid base and frame.  Getting them on was painful.  But once they are laced and tied tightly, the pain is substantially less (or the ibuprofen has kicked in).

Oh, for the record, I do hurt my feet on a regular basis, hence the full selection of restrictive boots to choose from.  My feet are right up there with my knees.  Surgery sometime in the future.  I just keep pushing the future further and further out.

Does pushing the future out count as aerobic or weight bearing exercise?
