I just saw an interview with a dietitian and former world-class marathon runner. I am always sceptical if someone who is super-fit tries to tell me I can follow his example, especially if that involves buying a book or some kind of supplement he is promoting. However, this time I think he had a really good word of advice:

Many people put on weight due to stress, but of course, it's not the stress itself that causes weight gain, it is our unnatural reaction to it. In nature, stress actually has a very positive role, putting the body on high alert, ready for a fight or to run to safety. Hence, the natural response to stress would be physical exercise - that's why it is such an effective way to relieve the feeling of stress. If we instead just comfort ourselves by overeating, we do nothing to decrease the stress levels (we just drown out the stress hormones), and of course, we put on weight in the process. It's a simple, and I believe sound explanation, but it is something to remember.

So, next time you feel particularly stressed from work, try to go for a run or bike ride before you sit down for a meal. And then, of course, make it a habit.
