A couple of things that kept me going are;

Wearing my old, a little bit to small clothes every couple of days to remind myself of why I was doing this.  The uncomfortalbe feeling of the tight clothes worked especially well when I knew there were going to be sweets around.

Chewing gum was my savior when I needed something sweet.

Drinking a lot of water, especially before a meal.  Adding a slice of lemon to it or a few drops of lime juice helps change the monotony.
