Yes I'm one of the crazy people who hops on the scale a million times a day! Three to be exact, nearly every day. I hear it isn't healthy and that you shouldn't weigh too often because your weight can naturally fluctuate and could be discouraged by a false gain. For me it is exactly the opposite. Seeing that number keeps me in check. It keeps me motivated. It cuts down the snacks! But only because I'm realistic about the number I'm seeing and I'm very familiar with how my weight naturally fluctuates. Everyone morning when I wake up I hop on the scale to see my daily progress. This is the number I count. If it's low I cheer and it motivates me for the day. If it isn't what I had hoped to see then I evaluate if there is a natural change in my body causing it. Was I good yesterday? Do I have sore muscles because somehow that always adds weight. Is it almost that time of the month? If I don't believe it to be a result of my calorie intake then I shrug it off and have faith that if I continue to be good then it'll balance out. Usually this results in a bigger than normal drop in a couple days as my body sorts things out on its own. If it was my calorie intake then I give myself a gentle reminder to eat healthy and maybe put a little extra umph into my workout. Then after what hopefully was a rewarding day I hop right back on the scale when I get home from work. I expect it to be a bit higher than my morning weight and if it seems to be in line then I smile and know that if I keep up the good work I'll be rewarded in the morning. This encourages me to make smart choices for dinner and no extra snacking! Finally I visit my scale one more time right before bed. This number is generally pretty close to my after work weight but could be slightly higher. No worries. By now I am able to estimate pretty closely what the scale will say after a good night's sleep. I predict my morning weight and this keeps me from going back to the kitchen for a late night snack. There are times I'll be laying in bad and something in the kitchen starts calling my name, but no, I don't want to mess up my morning prediction so I resist! I'm nuts right? At least I'm self aware of my scale addiction. But seriously it works for me and I don't believe there are any wrong answers with weightloss as long as you are giving your body the proper nutrition. Not every plan or idea works for everyone and we must each find the method that works best for us even if it does seem to go against the grain from time to time. Would I suggest to someone else to begin weighing three times a day? Never! I would say find what motivates YOU. Find what keeps you excited about your weightloss and motivates you to make the life changes and embrace that whatever it may be. I wish everyone the very best of luck in finding your weightloss tool! Enjoy your journey!
