A couple summers ago, I got the urge to lose some weight like I do every few years or so. In the first week, I was losing weight as usual. So I foolishly bought a pair of pants a couple of sizes too small in anticipation of downsizing my waistline and failed to do so. After that, my wife rounded up clothes that were too small for anybody in our household to be sold in our community lawn sale day. I urged her not to sell those small pants because I will fit in them someday in the future. To which she said, I DON'T BELIEVE YOU. Sure enough, they were sold for a dollar.
At the same time, the concrete stairs in front of my house were crumbling and about to collapse. They needed to be replaced before someone got injured. My wife and I considered hiring someone to do the job, but we had been reluctant due to our limited funds and prior bad experiences with hired handymen. I told my wife that we will be able to rebuild the stairs ourselves. To which she also said, I DON'T BELIEVE YOU.
I admit that I had no track record of sustained weight loss or succeeding at any type of carpentry project. She had every reason to doubt me, but something inside of me insisted that I could and would find a way to rebuild those stairs. After far too much debate, I convinced her to give me a chance. However, she was prepared to replace me with a professional if at any point I was failing.
Of course, it was not easy. It took time, dedication, and some advice along the way. There were times that we were about to lose our minds. We had to overcome many challenges along the way. The end result was an attractive, safe, and secure set of stairs and the satisfaction of completing a challenging project.
Here I am, with a size 34 waistline which was a 42, 8 months ago and not missing those size 38 pants that would be too big for me anyway.
Weight loss is a challenge that each and every one of us can overcome. Like a difficult construction project, we may need to make adjustments, fix mistakes, and rise up to meet expectations. I grew up observing the great accomplishments of my uncles and dad in the mechanical contracting business. As small as my 2 aforementioned accomplishments are, they mean everything to me. More importantly to me, my loving wife is now a BELIEVER and pleased with the results.
