Swimming is one of THE best activities one can do for exercise. It works all muscles, improves cardiac and respiratory functions, joint friendly, increases mood - and is somewhat of an "escape" since your head is under water most of the time :) Thirty minutes a day (or most days) is my goal. We have an "Endless Pool" which generates the wave and provides resistance so there is no turning around. Just swim continuously.
