Well, we survived! My niece got a medal and I got heat rash.
It was definitely a bittersweet moment for me. I was so proud of my niece. Many of the other kids were crying and she was a champ. As expected, she didn't like getting dirty, but she completed the obstacle.
The bitter part was how disappointed I felt in myself because I'm really out of shape. (I didn't expect the kid race to be mostly uphill or for the kid who doesn't like to run to actually run).
So at the end of the race, I assertedly asked for our "after" photo to be taken so I could curl up in a ball and cry (only a slight exaggeration).
Luckily I didn't have time to stay in the fetal position very long, as I needed to assist with kid sitting duty while the fit adults did the real deal.
It took a while to regain my strength, but I was up and moving to see the last 3 obstacles of the race and to cheer on the family.
So, ya, I wish I was in better physical condition. But I wasn't jealous that I couldn't particpate with the adults. I had tons of fun with my niece. And next year, I will beat her to the finish.
