I missed day 3 for travel. Those that are in my game, thank you for posting your favorites! And the recipes - yum!!! NOW FOR THE TRAVELORS - my feature fruit and vegetable of the day is going to be what i put in my hotel fridge - Grapes and Carrot slices!!!
OMG - my new favorites. First, i am in a strange town and I do not know my way around. I am right downtown also. What is a girl to do arriving late in the afternoon, downtown, on a dietbet - and starving? In desparation I googled grocery stores near me and surprise, I got an answer. Chrome browser on my cell phone brought up 3 groceries. I then took the addess to them in the maps and added the address of the hotel to find the nearest one was just seven tenth's of a mile from me! woo hoo WALKIES and FOOD!!! Less than an hour later i was back in my room with 3500 more steps and a bag of grapes, carrot chips, radishes and apricots (all organic). What I forgot was containers, but no mind. I just wash them as I eat them.
Grapes are GREAT! They are low in calories and high in energy. Yes some will say, "NO! They are all sugar." Well honey, it's ok. Here's the deal: everything is glucose to the body. Even protein eventually becomes glucose (sugar), it's just that some things become it quicker and easier. Also, don't eat the entire pound of grapes in one sitting!
A grape is 2 or 3 calories each. (It's hard to say which because let's face it some grapes are bigger than others even in the same bungh, but let's give them an average of 2.5 calories each)
A cup of grapes is 14 gr of carbohydrates (4*14=56 calories) and .8 gr of protein (4*.8=3.2calories) and .2 grams of fat (9*.2 = 1.8 calories) for a total of 61 calories per cup! I can't say how many cups are in a pound of grapes, but I think that a good estimate is 4 - 6 cups. (I always try to weigh my grapes and get the smallest bag because let's face it, they are too expensive to throw away)
They are in my opinion, the perfect finger food snack. I had them in the afternoon, I had some last night, I had a few before treadmilling this morning and, as you can see by the picture, by the time of this writing, I had had them all! haha Nothing to throw away!
Now let's talk Carrot Slices. Organic, of course. I have never bought these before. They are fresh organic. I usually buy the baby carrots or frozen carrot slices to cook with, but never raw carrot slices to eat like chips, but last night I did. Good choice. My hubs even suggested that this his new preference. He is thinking with a little dip.... and I am thinking all the calories are in the dip. But wait, I think I remember something about some Mrs. Dash and plain fat free yogurt..... when I get home I will research that! If you have that recipe then please put a link or the recipe in the comments.
The carrots feel like potato chips in your hand... sorta... with some imagination... and they taste like.. uh carrots. But that's good. Because carrots taste good, almost sweet.
They are still 35 calories a serving but because you can get more slices in a cup than little whole carrots, there are 52 calories a cup for sliced carrots. Still very low calorie.
A cup of sliced carrots has about 12gr carbs (4*12=48 calories) and 1gr protein (1*4=4 calories) and no fat (zero) for a total of 52 calories per cup of sliced carrots.
Another plus is while both grapes and carrots have 8 gr of carbs in the form of sugar, carrots also have 3 grams of fiber - nice filling fiber!
There you have it, my new travel snack foods - grapes and carrot slices!
Have a great day! and if you are in my dietbet and reading this - we have 4 days to go -- time to get serious!!!
