Most summers I get to go on a short fishing trip Up Nort as they say here in Minnesota. One of our group is failing unfortunately and so this year we went for nearly a week. I returned home in the middle of my son's cross town move. His closing was delayed for three days and he lost his moving company so they rented a U-Haul and used my beater pick up truck. Actually beater is being kind.
Anyway, some things I learned this week which I thouight I'd pass along to all of you:
1. Never assume that a 16 year old who latches into his first 50 inch Muskie will have the presence of mind NOT to stand up in the canoe. Good lesson though. He managed to hold on to the rod but his group lost about 400 dollars worth of gear in 30 feet of water.
2. Never give three 17 year olds 300 dollars to run into town and buy groceries for the week. Ramen, Fritos, and Velveeta are NOT food.
3. You cannot believe how agile and fast a moose cow is in water! The trolling motor was never going to keep us ahead of her. Thankfully the inboard started immediately and we bid farewell to that crazed beast.
4. Never, and I repeat never trust those same 17 year olds when they say they are sure that the cooler of filleted Walleye is in Grandpaps pick up. 200 miles later is a hell of a time to find out that they were only guessing.
5. Upon arriving home I discovered that my son was finally getting his moving done. They couldn't pick up the U-Haul until noon and so they borrowed my beloved rust bucket to help in the move. Once again, don't assume that those who borrow your truck will check on things like the radiator or the oil. By the time I got home I am fairly sure that the head gasket was leaking. The smell of an overheated engine is unmistakable.
6. Finally, in the midst of all the negatives my wife told me to cheer up and go look at a different truck. And that is the story of the picture.
