Volume 1 because I suspect I will be revisiting this discussion I am having with myself and sharing with you…. !!!

So, 18,000 steps a day made the scale move, finally.  And, sure enough, just as I suspected 20,000 steps moved it even more! Surprise Surprise! ShaZamm as Gomer would say!

Now if only there was a way of planning the exact number of daily steps to losing weight.  I am rather analytical and logical. It’s always calories in vs calories out. And frankly, it was all I could do last night to avoid even one piece of onion pizza (my favorite!) Hubs had two slices and only went up point 2 on the scales.

So what is the math?

Does running really burn more calories than walking?

Using the list of calories burned vs activity at: http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist4.htm

I located the same distance / weight / time of running vs walking:

One Hour of RUNNING (205lbs person)

**5 miles per hour (or a 12min mile) = 745 calories burned

(149 calories per mile)

One Hour of WALKING (205lbs person)

**5 miles per hour (or a 12min mile) = 745 calories burned

(149 calories per mile)

That’s interesting…. Same number of calories.

And the same distance traveled. Hhmmmm And while that may very well be my husband’s pace.. it’s not mine!!! Well not comfortably that’s for sure! Mine is more of a 3mile an hour which is up from a 2 mile an hour. And now that I am thinking of it, I think his is more of a 4mile of hour … that is on the list

One Hour of WALKING (205lbs person)

**4 miles per hour (or a 12min mile) = 465 calories burned

(116.25 calories per mile)

One Hour of WALKING (205lbs person)

**3 miles per hour (or a 12min mile) = 307 calories burned

(102.34 calories per mile)

There is a difference of 280 calories in that mile! Hhhmmmm something isn’t right here. Is it? Math says that calories burned on average is 116.25 per mile walking and 149 per mile running!

 What is the difference?

HEAT! SWEAT!  Let’s face it… everyone that has put something on the stove and answer the phone or checked just one Facebook posts knows that there is a fine line between done and burned to a crisp!

So you burn more calories the last mile than the first mile.  But there doesn’t seem to be a difference in walking vs running in calories burned except in the time that it takes to burn them.  Rather a slower walked mile burns less because you don’t get as heated (haven’t turned up the temperature of the body oven) and in a common hour you cover more distance in running than walking if you are doing a different pace.

A pound of body fat = 3500 calories.

At 20,000 steps a day, I walk, give or take a tiny percentage,  9 miles.

Let’s say I walk 5 of those miles on my own at my slower pace. That = 511.67 calories

And 4 of those miles with my love, my dear but faster paced husband. That = 465 calories for a total of 976 calories which is approximately 1/3 of a pound and on a digital scale --- providing you don’t eat more calories than you normally do! --- .3 down (that is point 3) each day…. For a grand total of ……. In 7 days…. That is SEVEN days…… 2.1 pounds a week.

Hhhmmmmm….. I might have to pick up the pace ……!!!!! But it’s a starting place….

How do you walk 9 miles a day…. For me, it’s often one lap at a time……;-)

So

Plan you day to get up off the computer at least once an hour and walk a lap around your neighborhood, or office or parking lot or …. Your kids!

And

First thing in the morning after small breakfast (for me coffee…. Not a morning person) and before you shower… try to get a mile in…..

In the evening around 6:30 – 7:30pm – well that is when you will find us out walking our 3 mile loop! And if it’s a busy night then we might do 1 mile at a time, each our, until bedtime.

Yes we make a concerted effort and it’s not always with a smiling face. That comes the next day when we step on the scales!

Now everyone – stop reading and start walking!!!
