In trying to increase my weight goal, I started to workout. To walk around the park. Turns out, all this extra weight on me took it's toll too soon. I am now hurting. My knee is hurting. Which prevents me from continuing to work out. Which puts me in an uneasy mood lately. I know it's probably is an excuse to not force myself and It might just be a reflection of how I have been feeling lately. Whatever it is, it's now allowing me to work out. What to do? How do I keep myself motivated to do something else to get this weight off?

Sign in to CommentThanks everyone for your great words and support. I gave myself a week to recover from the injury. It has been slowly healing and even thou it prevented me from progressing mentally, my desire to reach my goal help me physically. I have reached my monthly goal for this month. I have also started to work out again. I'm staring slowly so instead of 6 laps around the park I've walked for 4. It feels great to feel the wind in my face and the motivation on my waist. Thanks for your encouraging words, tips, suggestions, and personal experiences. They really help me out. To be honest, i didn't think anyone would read the blog. I just wrote it because I was feeling down but I'm glad I did. Thanks again.
I was stuck in a similar situation for months, and put on quite a bit of weight as a result. I really liked running (I still do) and felt like nothing else could come close. However, you can always find another sport. I got on my bike a lot more, and when I found that to be not ideal, I started to go swimming. I still don't like swimming, but it lets me experience much of the same post-workout mental boost that running used to give me. After a few months, I am fortunately back to running now, but I still try to vary what I do, getting at least one bike and two swimming sessions in per week. Cross-training not only helps you stay fit while you're injured, it also helps prevent injuries in the future. I am sure you can think of *something* you can do that doesn't hurt your knees - and if you can think of something, then by all means, go and do it. You will feel so much better afterwards!

Remember that 80% of weight loss is nutrition. I was out for almost 6 weeks and still lost a good bit--enough to win a game or two. Try new recipes, play with food options to help with motivation and remember your WHY. Good luck!

I feel your pain. I am - or use to be - a runner and was sidelined by injury for four months. I am now trying to get into it and am finding all of these new aches and pains. My knee is one of those pains. I use a patella band that velcros right under my knee to help keep it stabilized. That helps me significantly, so worth while to at least mention to you. Obviously, make sure you listen to your body - you would generally know if there was a tear or a serious injury. Sore muscles, however, are a good thing. Like James mentioned, protein is great to help your body recover. Doing some different curls with hand weights is great too, like Alice mentioned. You can ever sit on an exercise ball and do them! That will help your balance and keep the blood flowing. Good luck - you got this!
Make sure you are eating things like protein that help your body recover, and make sure you are resting to give yourself time to recover. I'm just starting to be more active too, and the harder I push myself the more I ache. But there is sore and there is injured. Sore is progress; it goes away if you rest and give yourself the nutrients to heal. Injured usually results in a visit to the doctor. I am trying to learn to listen to my body. Not just about food intake, but about training. Good luck!

Can you do something with the parts of your body that don't hurt? so if your knee is hurting, how about doing some arm curls while you watch TV? Can you do some stretching or other gentle moves? I understand what you're saying, less than a year ago I was still able to do some running and walk long distances, but I can't. I am trying to adjust to it, but in the meantime, I also am trying to find ways to get moving again. Hang in there. You can do this!
