How do you verify the weight loss?

For all official weigh-ins, you'll be prompted to submit your official starting weight. Our standard weigh-in process involves you submitting 2 photos: one of you standing on a scale in lightweight clothing (no shoes, hats, belts, watches, coats, or outerwear), and another of the scale’s readout with your weigh-in word written on a piece of paper.

What you'll need

  • A scale (preferably digital)
  • A digital camera or smartphone
  • A full-length mirror or someone to take your photo

Once again, I'm not feeling great about this month. We lost one of our cats 2 weeks ago to a very serious and sudden health problem, but even dealing with that grief, I did not veer far off course. I had 1 meal that was a little too big from panda express (weeks ago) and a few days where I was pretty close to what should be maintenance for me. Otherwise, I have stayed below my calorie goal. Still no luck.

I went up a few pounds for about a week after the last weigh-in and I've just now gotten back TO that weight. It feels very much like I'm not allowed to enjoy things, there's absolutely no wiggle room.

I did watch the Kurzgesagt video recent that digs into how exercise affects weight loss (very little, if at all) and have since adjusted my expectations, but all this knowledge really does it make it feel even harder, as there's no "eating back" exercise calories.

Dina - I wish that I could "feel" the difference of eating healthier food as you do, but my natural diet is not really unhealthy, per se, I just eat too much. I am envious of your 1800 calories of food. By all the calculators / trackers I can find, 1750-1800 seems to be my TDEE so I've had to find ways to cut from there.

George - I AM doing the things you mentioned. I wear a Fitbit AND a WHOOP with each giving me a lot of info and reminders about body metrics, movement, AND rest. I exercise 3x/week minimum, usually running. Some strength. As I've mentioned in a previous post in this game, I am careful about tracking food. I eat a lot of Huel - mostly because I hate cooking -which is very easy to measure and has a good combo of plant-based ingredients.

The problem I mentioned by bringing up Kurzgesagt is that recent research seems to indicate exercising does not increase your calorie expenditure. My understanding: for a lot of evolutionary reasons, the body tries extremely hard to keep your calorie expenditure consistent and so it responds to more exercise by decreasing OTHER calorie usage. This is supported by research in Exercised by Daniel Lieberman, which I read recently. Exercise is super healthy for many reasons, but it evidently does not impact *weight loss* the way we hope. It doesn't just increase that "calories out" side of the equation. Actively building muscle CAN increase overall calorie usage, but cannot happen during a cut so not applicable to this commitment/game.

TL;DR: I am doing my absolute best to "stay positive" but at the same time I am literally doing every single thing I know to do and yet my weight has gone up even since I posted a few days ago. I can believe in myself all I want, but that doesn't create results and I'm running out of strategies to try.
