  • I've been thinking about re-writing my WHY statement and SMART goals and came across the idea of "SMARTER" goals. Have you seen this before? They added "Evaluate" and "Revise." One other version I saw said "Reward" for the final R.

Have you found creating a Why-statement and SMART goal planning to be useful in your weight loss journey?

Tammy I have never seen any WHY statements as the one you posted but I have come up with my own version of WHY.

So I do this occasionally with people who get stuck and get the "what's the point" attitude especially if they lost a good amount of weight. I figure out how much they lost, then for the duration of our workout, I'll have them carry dumbbells back and forth to every place or station we work out without them realizing. When done I'll ask how they feel and the response is usually "man that was harder carrying that extra weight around". I remind them that's how much they lost so far, and THAT'S the point of doing everything they are doing. They get it after that.
Imagine if they lost 50lbs and had to lug it station to station for just 30 minutes (I remind them that it was just 30 minutes and not all day).

TIP OF THE DAY: Tendonitis- tendinitis is a common ailment that all people get sometime in their life. But with people who exercise regularly, it's a given. Tendonitis NEVER goes away once you get it, but it's the degree of inflammation that hampers you or not.
A couple of ways to reduce tendonitis is to ALWAYS do a sufficient warm up before you exercise hard. Many times it's just simulating the movement you do without resistance. And the second way is to wear a sleeve over the area that's bothered. A PULLON sleeve is better than one you use with velcro. I use elbow and knee sleeves whenever I train (I don't wear them other than training). They keep the joint warm and reduce some of the load off the joint (where tendons connect). And lastly STRETCH the area where the tedonitis is DAILY and frequently. The more stretching done, the less tension on the tendon thereby reducing the inflammation.

Yeah! I never even thought about this. I just quit moving it, which was probably the WORST solution. Thanks for the info, Jose! Does nutrition have an impact on this kind of inflammation or are "anti-inflammatory foods" a buzz phrase (or not related at all to this)?

Jose B

Foods that, have antioxidants help to reduce free radicals in the body that encourage inflammation. So things like blueberries, black berries, raspberries, etc.

Hey gang,

I like myself unconditionally!

Happy weekend! Just a regular Saturday for me. Closing store tonight.

Cardio: Walk/jog- 260 calories

Strength: quads- linear leg press, Smith machine squats, bulgarian squats, leg extensions 4x12,10,8,6

Assessment: Pizza for dinner. I got a lot of extra rest yesterday. Also got to watch some of the Olympia yesterday since I'm a gym rat and have followed bodybuilding forever.

Cool! I had to look up "Olympia" even though I got the gist of what you meant by context!

TIP OF THE WEEK: Why some supplementation can help- We all have times when we feel hungry and DON'T need to eat a bunch of extra calories and even things like brushing your teeth, drinking water, going for a walk, etc. don't seem to work. In those times (hopefully not too often), it's a great idea to sometimes supplement with something to take care of a craving without sacrificing a lot of the work you're putting in.
So, look into protein supplementation to help. Drinking a good protein shake will help to fill you up a little but also supply you with extra protein and nutrients. Protein helps to keep your insulin in check so that you're not feeling strong hunger pangs.
There's also some thermogenics you can buy that have appetite suppressing effects so that you don't feel like eating. NOW I'm going to advise that some people go overboard with thermogenics and use more than directed because of this so please DO NOT abuse them and use more than the directed dosage. Also don't try things like Alli, that don't let you absorb fat. Not only does it affect fat that's bad, but also GOOD FATS you need that are essential to your body. And you may poop your pants!
Other things that help are fiber supplements, especially if you're doing a keto diet where you're likely NOT getting in any fiber due to lack of carbs. Now remember this IS NOT a fix all and replacement for a good diet overall. You should STILL be trying to have a good overall diet. This is advice for the really tough times you may deal with and might need a little something to get over the hump. Your strategy is to still to learn how to eat in control and try not to use anything outside of that. Keep working on better eating choices and behaviors first and foremost.

I found myself wishing that the protein drinks I like were cheaper, but I think we are worth the meager investment!!

I have a concern about thermogenic supplements and hypertension. Are there ones that don't increase BP?

Jose B

Ones that have nitric oxides in them OPEN the blood vessels more to encourage blood flow.

  • "Hi, my name is Tammy and I'm a food addict." :) I was reading Jose's tip about cleaning ones plate and am inspired to share and learn from a perfect fail from my vacation this past week. Let me preface by saying that I am TRYING to cut cheese out because it is calorie dense, fatty, and salty (and not in line with my vegetarian-for-the-animals feelings).

At camp, we made pita pocket mini-pizzas over the campfire. I did a good portion-controlled-size veggie (mushrooms, peppers, sauce, and a little cheese). At the end, there was a lot of leftover cheese that I didn't want to just throw away. I poured it into a foil "boat" and made jokes about it "going to Valhalla," melted the left over cheese in the boat over the fire, and ate it all.

Where is my strength in those moments??!! I had plenty of time to reconsider, but couldn't find the willpower - in fact, I didn't think about it AT ALL...until later when I was sad that I blew it again!!

I suppose a positive is that I keep getting back in the saddle and overall, my weight loss is progressing (albeit slooooowwwwwly). I experienced food scarcity as a child (and weird twist, my dad horded the few times we had cheese, so it is definitely a trigger) and I'm sure that affects my habits now, but I want to overcome that.

My question for you is HOW to stay more mindfully present ALL of the time? Or MORE of the time?

  • You guys are the best!

Lisa K.

I hear you. I once had a friend who loved Mocha Frappes from McDonalds. She would order one, eat one bite to satisfy craving and throw it away after that bite.

I am an all or nothing if I love it. I’ve learned I don’t have the willpower required for certain foods so I just can’t if I’m in weight loss mode. Now there are times, I’m in living life to fullest so I’ll eat the damn cheese. You decide what’s best for you in that moment. You got this my friend.

So after not meeting round 2 & round 3 goal (was at a plateau) I am at 76% to make goal for round 4. I’ve been on this journey for about 2 years now and always go through a plateau for a few weeks but this was the longest one for me. I however did what I always do and did not allow it to bring me down!

Breaking it feels great

Good job, Zee!! Just got to push through it!! Thanks for sharing. I'm screwing up again and needed the inspiration!

Consistency is usually going to be the reason most people will stall in weight loss. And it takes time to take on life long habit changes that are for the better when one has had the same behavior for years. Just gotta keep plugging away!

Hey gang

I like myself unconditionally!

Happy Tuesday! Off today FINALLY and I get to work on some cleaning up at home and HAVE to mow the lawn. Other than that, I'll enjoy a day off.

Cardio: Walking/jog- 260 calories

Strength: chest- Hammer incline bench, machine flat bench, dips, cable crossovers 4x12,10,8,6

Assessment: Leftover fried chicken for dinner. I'll have to scale back on the fried foods in order to continue my weight loss trend.

I hope you enjoyed the day off! You reminded me that I need to mow my lawn one more time before the season change (we are Fall here in mid-Missouri, but it's still been pretty warm and my grass is long).

Hi, friends!! I didn't make my goal this morning, but I'm headed the right direction!! I'm finishing up a kickstarter and it really helped. BTW, I'm at camp and took my scale to a local shower house to weigh in!!! LOL
